This Mornings Excitement

September 30, 2009

f-16x2-107w-1

We here in east central Indiana had a little action this morning a little after 11:00 am.  A couple of State Air National Guard F16s were in hot pursuit of a small private plane heading in a southeasterly fashion when it’s pilot did not respond to NORAD.  Folks, you MUST respond to NORAD or you will be intercepted!  However, the pilot apparently suffered hypoxia or some other medical affliction and was ruled out as being a terrorist.  The plane crashed a few miles northeast of here (Muncie) in Randolph county just outside of Albany, IN.  No injuries beside the lone pilot, who died, have been reported.

Trivia factoids:  In 1973, a tornado (which passed right over our house in Muncie and damaged property in the north part of town) touched down just a couple of miles south of today’s crash site and completely leveled Monroe Central High School and the Funeral home across the street.  That same tornado hopped over the state line and wiped the town of Xenia, OH off of the map.  Lynn, IN (home of Rev. Jim Jones of Jonestown fame) is a few miles away in southern Randolph county.

Just another day here in Calamityville!

Oh Oh! The Big 5 & 0!

09-50th-birthday-gift-t-shirt-experience-400I finally surpassed the half century mark and after three days of recuperation, still don’t feel less than a century and a half old. Probably the combination of the Holiday and the milestone had a great deal to do with that. The year I was born, Labor Day was my Birthday. I really feel quite sure that another half century will not be in store for me, but, who knows? Maybe I’ll never die, just fade into the blogosphere.

Our New President!

August 29, 2009

I captured the CNN eulogy by our President Obama to the Kennedy family today. The most stunning oration ever put together in my lifetime! We have a solid winner with our new president, and even though I was brought up as a Republican, it doesn’t matter… We are all in this together. The multiple party system has it advantages.

Hat’s off to our leader!

Philosophy

August 20, 2009

A topic such as “Philosophy” has always seemed to me another secondary subject requiring immersion into meaningless, tedious & monotonous tasks of learning! At least, from the time that I realized what the definition of “philosophy” was, I have felt that way. As I ripen with years, and after many readings upon which hover around “philosophy”, a realization arises within that, perhaps, “philosophy” is not a secondary “topic”, yet a “primary” methodology of looking at life, approaching it, and governs everything that your life entails.

Oh well, I’m through with my reading of “China’s Imperial Past”. Time for me to move on to another “topic” I suppose.

A couple of weeks ago, I heard that Walter Cronkite was gravely ill and the rumor was that he had passed away.  Then, the news was that he was not only alive, but enjoying life comfortably from his home in Chicago with his lady friend (Joanna Simon, Carly’s older sister).  Then the news of Farrah Fawcett and on the same day Michael Jackson.  Next was Billy Mays (I found out a week after the fact) and then McNair, Gatti and Arguello.  Now that I’m getting over those losses, Walter passes.

September marks my 50th year and I vividly remember Walter Cronkite being a daily influence in our home for two decades.  I was sitting with my Father following all of the events surrounding the Kennedy assassination in 1963, then Martin Luther King, Robert Kennedy, the feature segment on “20th Century with Walter Cronkite”  in 1968 about my Father’s Air Force research team testing G-force on baboons (Dad’s nickname was “The Boon Doc”), the lunar landing and Woodstock in 1969, as well as, of course, the Kent State incident in 1970.

Oh well, 92 years young ain’t too bad and everybody has to go some day …

I guess that really is just “the way it is”.

Farrah_Fawcett_1The passing of not one but two …

While reading about Farrah, Michael popped up on my news ticker.  Not to mention, Walter Cronkite’s condition (which has apparently been over-inflated) and the passing of Ed McHahon this week has amounted to a personal re-evaluation.

50 years will be under my belt this September and I’m starting to think that none of the influences that have guided me this far will not be around.

Growing older is a bitch!

The only consolation - ” it’s better than the alternative”.

culinary-herbsAbout 3 weeks ago, I planted several varieties of culinary herbs in the back yard as well as in the house.  I also planted a “Roma Grape” tomato plant in back.  So far, the only specimens that appear to be growing are the cilantro (appeared first and is easily discernable from weeds),  the sage, the parsley and maybe the basil.  Some of them are so similar to some of the other local seedlings around here that I won’t know for some time.  The indoor plants; dill & basil, so far have not done a thing.

I came across a pertinent gardening wordpress blog which is:

http://balconygreens.wordpress.com/ which I have bookmarked as a favorite.

Happy Gardening!

‘S Up W Dat?

March 11, 2009

100c_y3f5mz1As I read through the daily news feeds, my eyes will now roll sub-consciously. YET, one clip definitely caught my conscious attention and made me ask myself: “With the state of our National economics, how in this world is NASA able to continue it’s plan of escaping planet earth? These projects are paid for by the same folks that are standing in lines for bread, jobs, etc…”

Cut NASA funding!
At least temporarily.

spring2009The current temperature reading here in Muncie, Indiana is 64 degrees farenheit.  The forecast calls for rain over the weekend and temps ranging from mid-sixties to freezing.  Perhaps it’s about time for “Old Man Winter” to go bye-bye.
